Sutcliffe gives new centre seal of approval

Here is the Keighley News report following the great success of our open evening:

More than 200 people attended when the Keighley Table Tennis & Recreation Centre was officially opened by Sports Minister Gerry Sutcliffe. International players were also present to mark the unveiling of the new facility, which is based in the Keighley Business Centre at Knowle Mill on South Street.

The Bradford South MP praised the efforts of volunteers, who had put in around 2,000 hours of work to make a first-class sporting venue. He said that Keighley had a bright future in sport, with the centre being the latest of a number of achievements, following the opening of the new sport facilities at Silsden football and cricket clubs and the recent promotion of Keighley Cougars.

Former Scottish men’s champion Brian Kean was joined by England No 16 male Kevin Dolder and England No 5 female Lindsey Reynolds, who were all able to thrill the crowds when demonstrating their table tennis skills.

Unfortunately, John Hilton, who normally joins Kean to bring a touch of humour, was unable to attend because of illness, so the stooge role was played out by the centre’s very own Peter Holbrook. In addition to eight competition tables, the venue has kitchen and bar facilities and a lounge area.

Further work will be carried out to provide changing rooms, showers, a conference room and general activity room, making the place suitable for a variety of recreational activities. Membership of the centre is now available from just £8 per month, which allows up to five hours’ social play. There are also memberships available for players in the Keighley and District League and for families.

As well as the current Haworth Hawks coaching times on a Friday evening and Sunday morning, there is now a Thursday session between 12pm and 2pm for the over 50's and anyone is welcome.

Individuals and groups interested in hiring the centre or becoming members should contact Andy Bray on 07766 428307 or Peter Holbrook on 07773 775379 or visit www.keighleytabletennis.co.uk.
